Steve A. Petersen, M.D., has been promoted to Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, effective July 1, 2008. Congratulations, Dr. Petersen!

Lynne Jones, Ph.D., was recently elected, in Amsterdam, to the position of President-Elect for the Society For Biomaterials (U.S.), which will be followed by the Presidency for 2009/2010. The Society For Biomaterials is a professional society which promotes advances in all phases of materials research and development by the encouragement of cooperative educational programs, clinical applications, and professional standards in the biomaterials field. Dr. Jones also has been selected as a Fellow, Biomaterials Science & Engineering by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science & Engineering for her work in the field. In addition, Dr. Jones serves as Member-At-Large for the Orthopaedic Research Society.

Bashir Zikria, M.D., was recently celebrated at the 2008 Resident Day as “Teacher of the Year”. This is a great honor, as it is voted on by all the residents.

Thomas Brushart, M.D., Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, received the Hanno Millesi Award from the World Federation of Neurological Societies at its March meeting in Vienna, Austria. The award, named in honor of the pioneering peripheral nerve surgeon who developed modern techniques of nerve grafting, recognizes Brushart’s “outstanding contributions to peripheral nerve research.”

Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Review Course July 7 - 11, 2008 Monday through Friday $695.
This year our Review Course is 5 days, Monday through Friday. This year’s topics include: Pathology, Basic Science, Spine, Hand, Foot/Ankle, Pediatric Orthopaedics, Sports Orthopaedics and Adult Reconstruction.
The course also includes handouts for all topics, special lectures on “How To Study for the Boards”, test questions and mock exams, breakfasts and lunches, and 2 dinners with faculty. Link to a pdf about the course and how to register.

Congratulations to Richard Skolasky for completing his Sc.D. in Health Policy and Management from the Bloomberg School of Public Health. His dissertation analysed the determinants of functional recovery following low back surgery. This work was supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and is currently being prepared for manuscript submission.
Richard’s research focuses on improving patient safety and outcomes through furthering knowledge and increasing the efficiency of spine care.
